New Youth Group opens its doors to local children and teenagers

Dazzle for Children and Young People is a new Youth club based on Barrow Island for children and young people aged 12-19 years

The new group project is funded by Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioners Fund and the Eric Wright Charitable Trust.

The organisation was established in March 2014 to provide free kids clubs to children aged 6 to 12 years. The clubs provide activities centred around health and wellbeing and offer positive experiences to children as well as activities that are developed through consultation with children whenever possible.

The pilot project offers a range of activities as requested by children and young people who, participated in recent surveys on Barrow Island in December 2017 and a second survey in August this year.

The new youth group will be held at the Community Hub on Barrow Island, a fantastic facility that officially opened its doors in May 2017 and has become a favoured venue for various activities.

A youth group on the Island 10 years previously had proved popular, however the club finished when the Community centre closed down.

The youth club has taken nine months to set up, with extra training being provided for the team as well as assistance from other youth organisations.

The club will help build community cohesion, may help reduce anti-social behaviour and create a sense of belonging .

There is also a Kids Club for children aged 6-11 years at St Johns Church Hall every Saturday 6.00pm-7.00pm where you can leave your children with the friendly team and have some free time. Younger children are welcome to attend the club however a parent/carer must remain with them.

The kids club is free and is funded by Barrow Island Community Trust.

The Dazzle for Children and Young People team wish to thank the following people and organisations who have assisted them with advice and support whilst setting up the youth project.

P.C.S.O Tina Sykes , Cath Clarke Cumbria Youth Alliance , Les McLeese Youthability, Cath Corkill Drop Zone , Natalia Weallens Turner Brathay Trust , Ami France Core Education, Andrew Bass, Ali Greenhalgh Cumbria CVS , The Academy and Walney schools, Rob McAloone and Barrow Island Community Sports Trust for enabling us to  have our Youth club at the Hub.
