EXCLUSIVE: Consultation to be launched for merger of Barrow schools

A consultation is to be launched into merging Barrow’s existing academy schools in to a multi-academy trust with a rumoured £20m cash injection.

In a statement to parents Parkside GGI Academy headteacher Caroline Walker explained how the current educational landscape created a massive challenge and they must look at future proofing local schools.

She said: “It is now more important than ever that schools work in partnership to enable the very best educational opportunities and services.

“To this end, a proposal is currently under discussion to create a new Multi Academy Trust, open to all Barrow-in-Furness schools.

“This proposal would see the merger of two existing multi academy Trusts, the Inspired Learning Trust and the Furness Academies Trust with the sponsorship of BAE Systems.

“These two trusts, currently comprising of four academies: Parkside GGI Academy, Yarlside Academy, Victoria Academy and Furness Academy, would merge creating a brand new trust.

“As a school and as a Trust, we believe that this is an exciting and positive opportunity. By working together as a wider family of schools, we can share a joint approach to supporting our students their families and our staff. An initial meeting has taken place to share this proposal with other schools and our families will be consulted in the near future. We would like to reassure you that, although this seems like a big change for our school, both myself, our governors and the Trust believe this is the next step in developing educational excellence in Furness and we hope you will support us in this venture.”
