Cllr John Murphy wants to 'Light Up Jubilee Bridge'

Councillor John Murphy wants to place LED lights under Jubilee Bridge, which connects Barrow and Walney.

John has spoken with the Managing Director of Story Contracting who is currently carrying out maintenance/improvement works to the bridge, who confirmed that scaffolding will be getting erected next year in April/May time, to allow the bridge to be painted.

John feels that this would be the perfect time to utilise the scaffolding to fit the bridge with colour changing LED lights.

John will now approach Cumbria County Council, the owner of the bridge, for planning permission.

John said: “I love our bridge and I want it to become a centrepiece for the area.

"The lights could change colour for different things that are happening in the town, or around the world, this would be Barrow's lit up landmark.

"I am talking with a local lighting company with regards to the costs involved.

"The council does not have money to fund this project, so it would rely on sponsorship and fundraising for this project to proceed.

“I think it is a wonderful idea and I hope the people of Barrow would support me in doing something positive for our bridge."

We have created an example picture of what the bridge might look like with LED lighting...
