Northern Soul night and Sleeproughathon raises £1,605 for Furness Homeless Centre

A Northern Soul night and Sleeproughathon raised a massive £1,605 for Furness Homeless Centre smashing the £1,000 total they planned to raise.

Organisor Margaret Chadwick said it was a great night and well supported, adding that the sleep out that followed was tough but highlighted the plight of those they wanted to support.

Margaret put together the event after being shocked by levels of homelessness and the brutality shown to such vulnerable people.

She explained: “In 2017 I organised a Sleeproughathon  in a field at Roanhead for the charity Depaul. Myself, my daughter Ashton, my niece Jolene and friends and colleagues Jean Skelton and Gail Greer all slept out overnight and raised over £1,200 for young people who have to rely on sofa surfing.  This year I wanted to target vulnerable people of all ages.

“Furness Homeless run an unresourced Day Centre and have to rely on charity and donations from others to continue They work 365 days a year and particularly busy at Christmas.

“This year we held a charity sleep out and Northern Soul and Motown music night on February 9 at Hawcoat Lane Sports Centre.

“The music part of the night had a fantastic turn out with lots of donations for raffle prizes and everyone had a great night.

“The sleep out in the tent afterwards was hard going until 6am, there being a ground sheet and a basic tent with “doors” front and back laced up, which hopefully highlighted the plight of those who have to endure worse conditions every night with no respite.

“Four people slept overnight in the tent, myself , Jolene Bromley, Melanie Gilmour and Stephen Newman.  The overall donation will hopefully help FHSG to run their un-resourced Day Centre which provides a place for clients to have showers, food, a warm environment to turn to and to help prevent total isolation and providing essential support.

“Online donations raised £730 and the offline donations which include door entry charge to the music night/raffle prizes/personal donations/donation buckets on the night totalled £737 plus £138 gift aid giving a total of £1,605.”
The link will remain open for a further few weeks I believe for any further donations.
