Furness Phantoms give Barrow's Mayor a taste of American Football

The Furness Phantoms held their 4th 'Rookie Day' of the season in Barrow on Sunday at Furness Academy.

The American Football session had a turn out of around 25 players, including a special guest, the Mayor of Barrow, Bill McEwan.

David Hughes said: "It goes to show this sport is for all sizes and all ages.

"Bill was very supporting and enthusiastic about the sport taking part in a couple of training drills.

"The rookies got to try out the position they think they want to play in.

"Don’t forget you don’t have to wait for an open day to come down. Just turn up with boots, gum shield and a willingness to learn or expand your knowledge and the coaches and players will do the rest.

"We train at GSK sports club in Ulverston on sundaes 10:30 to 12:30 and Wednesday 6pm to 7.15pm.

"See you there!"

Bill McEwan said: "What a privilege to be invited along to have a run out with the Furness Phantoms American Football Team and help to promote their efforts to attract more youngsters to come along and sign up and be part of this growing sport to our country, but more so to our town .

"They already have a adult team up and running who play competitive games, but are trying to get a youth team up and running, so it was a delight for me to go along this morning and do some Training (Ha Ha!) With these youngsters of about a dozen they have already signed up, but need more to join to enable them to set up a youth team .

"So come on all you youngsters out there come along and join up with the Furness Phantoms, and help get a youth team up and running.

"It's great fun, I enjoyed their training and as Barrow Mayor i am happy to support and promote their efforts."
